Foundational Science

Epigenetics β€” How Your Environment Talks to Your Genes

Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work β€” without altering the DNA sequence itself. Think of your genome as a piano and epigenetic markers as the pianist: the keys are fixed, but which notes get played (and how loudly) is shaped by the world around you. These changes are reversible, which is the hopeful part β€” the way you live can literally tune gene expression up or down.

What it is

Chemical tags β€” like DNA methylation and histone modifications β€” sit on top of genes and act as β€œon/off” switches. They decide whether a gene is read or silenced, and they respond in real time to your lifestyle and surroundings.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma Is Not What Happens to You β€” It’s What Happens Inside You

The event itself is not the trauma. The trauma is the lasting imprint the experience leaves in your nervous system β€” the way your body keeps defending as if the threat were still here. It is the disconnection from yourself, from others, and from the present moment. It is the alarm that never fully turns off.

This is why two people can live through the same event and carry very different wounds. What shapes the trauma is not only what happened, but whether you had the support, safety, and capacity to feel it fully and move through it β€” or whether you had to fragment, freeze, or push it away to survive.

It lives in the body

Trauma is stored in the nervous system β€” in held breath, braced muscles, and a body that stays ready for danger long after it has passed.

It disconnects

It pulls you out of the present and away from yourself β€” into numbing, hypervigilance, or the loop of a story you cannot finish telling.

It can heal

Because trauma is unfinished, it can be completed β€” through presence, safety, relationship, and the body-based practices offered throughout this app.

Clinical History

Estrogen Therapy β€” A History of Healing

The idea that something was missing in a woman's body after menopause stretches back to the 1800s, when physicians injected cow ovarian tissue into German women to reverse menopause's sexual symptoms. The story of estrogen therapy since then is one of scientific inquiry β€” breakthroughs, missteps, and a steady refining of who benefits, who is at risk, and how to deliver it safely.

How estrogen therapy evolved

1800s

German physicians inject cow ovarian tissue into women β€” among the earliest recorded attempts to replace the "missing factor" after menopause and reverse its sexual symptoms.

1917

Dr. George Papanicolaou first accurately describes the role of estrogen in guinea pigs, laying the scientific foundation for understanding the hormone.

1942

Premarin β€” conjugated equine estrogens extracted from the urine of pregnant mares β€” is marketed, becoming one of the earliest widely used estrogen therapies.

1940s–60s

Books and publications promote estrogen for "menopausal disorders," and use doubles and triples through the mid-1970s.

1975

Studies reveal that unopposed estrogen carries an eight-fold increased risk of endometrial cancer. Premarin sales plummet as the risk becomes clear.

Early 1980s

Adding a progestogen to estrogen is shown to protect the uterine lining, giving rise to combined estrogen–progestogen therapy β€” the standard for women with a uterus.

1992–2002

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trials begin, and the 2002 results reshape the conversation around risks, benefits, and who is the best candidate for therapy.

Present

Modern guidance (The Menopause Society, 2023) affirms hormone therapy is safest when started under age 60 or within 10 years of menopause, with transdermal routes often preferred.

Mast cells are a type of immune cell found throughout your body β€” in your skin, gut, lungs, and around blood vessels. They play an important role in defending against infections and healing injuries. When mast cells sense a threat, they release chemical signals (called "mediators") such as histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins. This process is called "activation" or "degranulation." In some people, mast cells become overactive and release these chemicals too easily or too often, even when there is no real threat. This is called mast cell activation.
